BEIJING, CHINA (7 September 2005)—Singaporean singer Sun Ho’s donations to social work agencies in China have brought about the formation of two local schools, catering to the education needs of both the poor and the young.
In 2004, Sun was deeply moved by the plight of the less fortunate in China after a promotional trip here for her chart-topping “Lonely Travel” Mandarin album. In response, she committed herself to donate a sizable portion of the royalties from that album to various charities under the umbrella of the Children and Youth Foundation of China. Sun’s generosity and compassion have resulted in the construction of two schools in the cities of Chong Qing and Liao Ning. Both schools are named after her.
In Liao Ning, Sun helped to set up a school for young ladies from poorer families. This institute provides these women with guidance and training in practical skills that would help them tremendously as they prepare to enter into the workforce. Sun also contributed to purchase new personal computers for the school.
Her donations also aided in the rebuilding of a primary school in Chong Qing, giving close to 400 students in that area a chance to receive a good education in a new facility.
Sun’s philanthropic efforts in China have gained the attention of the authorities here, who in turn have awarded her with the title of the “Ambassador of Love” for the Children and Youth Foundation of China, as well as the privilege of being featured in an official First Day Stamp Cover. This is the first time a foreign celebrity has been given this honor.
